Are Plastic Pallets the Better Choice for Your Business?

Plastic pallets can be the right investment for any business, as they offer many advantages over standard wood pallets; if you're in the market for new pallets for your shipping or warehouse facility, you might note a few of those advantages here. This will ensure you get the right type of pallet for your company and are happy with this investment for years to come.

Colour coding

To help you organize your inventory when items are being stored or shipped, you might use colour coding for your pallets. Colours can signify a certain type of product, a customer, a place in the warehouse where something should be stored, and so on. Since plastic pallets are available in just about any colour you can imagine, they make it easy to organize your inventory without having to read labels or stencilling.

Hygienic

Even if it's been seal-coated and otherwise treated and pressed, wood can still harbor germs and bacteria and become a good host for mould, mildew, termites, and other pests. Because of this, some industries and locations actually put restrictions on the types of pallets used for shipping foodstuffs, medicines, and other items that may be especially sensitive to germs and bacteria.

Plastic is a poor host to these irritants and won't be eaten by termites or chewed on by rats in the warehouse. This makes it a more hygienic and safer choice for any item you're storing and shipping.

Lightweight but durable

To make a wood pallet durable enough to hold any significant weight, it usually needs to be thick and dense. This thickness and density then adds to its own weight, which increases your shipping costs! Plastic pallets are, by their nature, very durable yet still very lightweight. You can ship heavier or bulkier items on plastic pallets without worrying about the pallets breaking or facing any added shipping or storage fees.

Eco-friendly

You may assume that wood is more eco-friendly than plastic, thinking that wood is easier to recycle and reuse. However, if a wood pallet suffers water damage or is holding mould and mildew, it often needs to be tossed in the rubbish or burned. Plastic is also very easy to recycle, as it can be melted down and then reshaped and reused again and again, even when the pallet itself is damaged. In the long run, plastic can then be the more eco-friendly since it's easier to recycle and may not ever wind up in a landfill.
